Maternal nutrition

Nutritious whey and milk-based ingredients for maternal nutrition
Pregnancy is a time of joy and major physiological changes. A mother’s nutritional needs increase during pregnancy and lactation to support these changes and ensure growth and development of the unborn child 1,2. A well-balanced diet with appropriate weight gain reduces the risk of complications for both mother and child 3.

We offer several ingredients that can be used to help meet these increased nutrient requirements during pregnancy and lactation.

Protein
During the development of the foetus, placenta and maternal tissue there is an increased demand for protein 4.
Our high-quality Lacprodan® whey proteins are rich in the essential amino acids and can support the nutritional goals of maternal diets.

Calcium
It has been suggested that calcium supplementation may reduce the risk of maternal bone loss and pregnancy complications such as hypertensive disorders (pre-eclampsia) and preterm birth 5.
Our Capolac® milk minerals are high in calcium (> 24%), and have a calcium phosphate structure similar to that of bones and teeth.

Phospholipids and gangliosides
Phospholipids and gangliosides are bioactive lipids that has been suggested to play a role in cognitive development in early infancy 6. Animal studies showed that gangliosides were capable of crossing the placenta, becoming available to the developing rat foetus 7,8, 9, and that milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) supplementation to obese rats during rat pregnancy improved cognitive parameters of rat offspring 10.  Our whey protein concentrate Lacprodan® MFGM-10 is rich in phospholipids and gangliosides.

Smart solutions for maternal nutrition
Lacprodan® whey proteins, Capolac® milk minerals and Lacprodan® MFGM-10 can be used in convenient food solutions - ideal for active mothers.

To demonstrate the possibilities, our application specialists have developed two product concepts with Lacprodan® MFGM-10, a premium Smart Mama beverage and a bar.

Both offer the following benefits:

  • High in protein
  • Convenient
  • Great taste
  • Stable at ambient temperatures
